Tuesday -- Crafts, Helen, Hiking

Tuesday morning we spent time doing craft in the cottage! Mimi had prepared packages for the girls including the materials for scrapbooking. So there were many moments of sitting around the table, cutting and pasting memories into books.

Our craft urges continued through the morning where the girls went to paint their own pottery. Helen and the surrounding area are full of potters peddling their wears. This one shop in particular also offered painting the pottery as an activity for kids. Madison did a psychedelic dog and Savannah a trippy bunny.

After crafts it was time for a bit of tourism in the town of Helen; they call it an "Alpine Village". We'd been on walks through this strange, little germanic town, but hadn't fully exploited the opportunities of kitsch it provides. This day we did a buggy ride, an "old" photo (you know the ones where you dress up in old west clothes and pose), and ended our day by having a lazy lunch in a biker diner with klobasa.

The evening was upon us and we stuck to the plan of going to Anna Ruby Falls, a well-known water fall adjacent to Unicoi State Park. The falls are named after a wealthy resident's daughter. He was said to have found them while wandering in grief after his wife's death. They are special because they include a rare double waterfall two creeks converge.

Our walk was pleasant and quiet with few people at the evening hour. They all stopped to admire Frank, of course.
